Kenya's Edwin Koech Kibert and Ethiopia's Alemenesh Herpher Guta have won the 2023 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon in the men and women's categories. The 42Km race kicked off at the national stadium, Surulere and had its finish point at the Eko Atlantic, Victoria Island. Kibet, who beat over 300 other marathoners to the grand prize of $50.000.00 returned at 2 hours, 14 minutes and 6 seconds, Ethiopia's Gaddisa Tafa Dekebe came second at 2 hours, 14 minutes, 54 seconds while Bernard Sang also from Kenya clinched the third position with a time of 2 hours, 17 minutes and 14 seconds. Meanwhile, winner of the 2018 edition, Alemenesh Guta won the women's category with a time of 2 hours, 40 minutes and 42 seconds, leaving compatriot Kebene Urisa who finished in 2 hours, 40 minutes, 44 seconds and Kenya's Naomi Maiyo who also returned in 2 hours, 40 minutes and 56 seconds in second and third places respectively. The 8th edition of the race had notable personalities in attendance amongst whom were the Minister of Youths and Sports Development Chief Sunday Dare and the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Obafemi Hamzat including renown sports administrators: Chief (Dr.) Tonobok Okowa who doubles as Delta State Sports Commissioner and Athletics Federation of Nigeria President, Sports guru: Chief Solomon Ogba.
